Located in Changzhou, China, Balcony House is a factory building of a high-end Italian lighting brand. It provides a set of functions for production, storage, office, exhibition, meeting, logistic, etc. Before it settled in, it was only a complete large space workshop. The height of 12 meters goes through its huge area, which is covered by a complete rectangular metal cladding.

As this project is about the nature and function of the factory, it is a very rational process to work out the relevant necessary functions and manage the reasonable moving lines. In a large space, what matters in this design lies in attempting to place various functional blocks in an efficient and comprehensive way. Also, having a large-scale height for the production and storage of products and parts in the factory is a necessity. However, the huge volume will make staff and visitors uncomfortable. Hence, in the south part of the factory, we follow a principle of “a building within a building” inside the space, part of which is a 5-meter-high house with a single story (with terrace above), and the other is a double-layer house. They are set side by side. The office and logistics areas are located on the first floor, which is set inward. They are self-contained rooms with doors and windows open to the production area of the factory. Part of the exhibition area is located on the first floor, and it is close to the glass curtain wall of the building's exterior façade and to the guest entrance and exit, facing the outdoor lawn area with sufficient sunlight. Located on the first floor, the other part is at the top of the logistic area and it is set outward. We eliminate the facade wall but only install the low wall with the height of the railing. The whole space is directly facing the huge production area, which is the "balcony" in the factory. There is a huge difference between staying within such a large "balcony" and our day-to-day experience with space. It is super large, super high and located indoors. It is essentially not only a place for products, exhibitions, and other activities but also a terrace for people to overlook the surrounding. Standing above, under the "sky" of the giant roof of the factory, orderly but busy production scenes within the blocks are presented. In fact, every guest will be most interested in what they see and how they feel.

The small traffic area within the newly built building is dotted with some symbolic spaces-- connecting the office area with different functions, the semicircle top colonnades block the pipelines and equipment where the light and fresh air sprinkle from the gap between the top and the wall. That is, the complex equipment is completely managed and blocked, reducing the scale of space; once within, guests would get a sense of intimacy and comfort, at the same time, the whole clean space indicates the locality of the brand culture.

Within the rigorous and regular atmosphere of the factory, the sense of function takes the priority, then the sense of form goes. The rational and simple materials are selected from the factory building materials, and the warm and simple colors are used to make the space bright and tidy. The design should be rational and restrained to minimize the subjective expression of a visual image. In the large space, only laboratories with some requirements for functional color are created. In terms of design, some industrial construction materials with little selectivity in function are artistically matched, naturally presenting the laboratory in a lively and decorative style.

It is not a project about decoration but an interior renovation in the original building space. The idea of “a building within a building” in a large interior space runs through the process of design and construction and becomes the theme of this project. The new fabric weakens the distinction between doors and windows, instead, they are designed as openings with the same proportion and size, which makes the image of the internal building facade closer to the scale proportion of the European colonnade. It also serves to act both as a way to make the image more concise and elegant and to meet the function of a factory, and at the same time a presentation of the local culture of the brand. The area of product storage consists of multi-story shelves and is well planned in a large space. The products are neatly placed on the shelves and the whole is a metaphor for multi-story buildings.

As the design tends to its functionality and rationality during the design process, subjective feelings become fainter, in contrast, the mutual segmentation and connection between various functional blocks are accentuated, which is about the relationship between seeing and being seen. The great vigor of production and storage area corresponds with a superb collection of beautiful things in the display area of the office. We often stand in the balcony and take an overlook at the large space of the production area with a feeling of vitality and majesty, as well as go to the production area to see the perfect corner of the exhibition area. No matter where we are, we can find the beauty and freshness of the opposite from here. It has nothing to do with decoration but it is a different feeling brought by the difference in the scale of the space and the function. "I built a balcony on the north side of the house because the north side faces the mountain. I often envy the "fairyland" on the mountain from the balcony. Finally, one day, I set out to look for a fairyland in the mountains. When I arrived, I was surprised to find that people there envied my house. " - Herman Melville, Balcony
