My name is Nolan Chao. I am a Beijing native. Being an architect, I see my work as a series of research and design exploration through the lens of space, notion, image from different types and angles. It’s been a pretty interesting journey but with some sort of challenges, and recently I accepted this as an interior design project.

In terms of normal residential interior design, it’s hard to bring any spatial freshness with normal design approaches. The couple from Beijing came to me with a desire to express their different lifestyle combined with a certain sort of spatial feeling within the quasi-traditional Hutong. (Only the couple and their pet live there.) Based on the notion of “Lane”, I attempted to test different practices in the process of design and to realize and express it with common construction and decoration approaches in the process of construction. Besides, I carried out many what we call “loading” and “unloading” design processes, during which I realized that my focus is always on dealing with the relationship and proportion between privacy and publicity, and I treated this interesting contradiction with a sensitive and serious attitude. Hence, the owner prefers grilles, curtains or other decorations if they want more privacy and isolation, while they don’t use them if they want more open space. To expand the visual effect of the space to two or three times, I removed some indoor partitions to unite the different small spaces. The original was like a typical square residential building, and it’s a dull structure unless we eliminate some walls and make some changes, in this way we see different types of rooms as spaces with different functions. Each space is set with at least two or more "connections" with other blocks, like holes, window or door openings, and the effect of wall shading intertwined with the spatial flow are created in the overall space, just like "street in the block" and "lane in the alley".

We provide the owner with options for spatial connectivity with great diversity and freedom, and in turn, the owner holds more opportunities and possibilities to develop and create a better life, while experiencing the convenience brought by free association within the space and no block communication directly with their families and relatives at any time. In the center of the house, there is a functional corridor. What lies in the back area of the corridor is the owner's series of private space, which is a private room. Windows, curtains, lattice doors, and partition doors can be adjusted and function as barriers, while taking into account the privacy as well as the variability of openness. As the owner closes all the wooden doors and mirror doors in the corridor, the private space has a clear boundary and a considerable distance from the outside world, then what is left for the owner is a very core ceremonial clean area.

I insisted on the selection of original materials with little treatment, such as stone, wood, metal, and glass. The materials and construction approaches compatible with interior decoration and building fabrication were adopted to curate a more open and harmonious atmosphere. In the thinking and article of Nature Online, Alvar Aalto puts forward that the space created by architects should be a harmonious world that attempts to weave the vision and time of life together with clues, where the weave originates with multiple emotions and interactions among people. The biggest challenge in this design we encountered was being an architect and designer, I was often exposed to the question of "what is the attitude towards life in this space". I see the process of design as a track of exploring the attitude of this question, hence, I never stop figuring out a better solution.

I was attempting to reduce the influence of color, shape and other elements and techniques in terms of the interference of design and to focus on the nature of lifestyle, and at the same time, it provides the owner with a pleasant experience of convenience brought by the whole large-area space no matter in the kitchen, bedroom, living room, or a certain table. This greatly improves the perception and understanding of the whole space as well as the visual and perception efficiency, which is meaningful to experience a lifestyle in such an "expensive" city.

I am always thinking about the essence of living life. Not only do I often design private space for different owners, but also because I gradually feel the theme of living and shelter, which originate with the intention of architecture and interior design.
